"Out of the eater came something to eat

Out of the strong came something sweet."

For three days they worked on this riddle and could not come up with the answer. Finally, they went to Samson’s wife and said, "Get your husband to tell you the answer to that riddle or we’re going to burn your father’s house to the ground."

These boys took bar bets seriously. They had no intention of losing to some Jew who had come to town throwing his weight around.

So the wife went crying to Samson and said, "You have given my people a riddle and you haven’t even told me the answer. It’s not fair. I’m your wife. If you loved me you’d tell me."

Samson grinned and said, "I haven’t even told my mother and father the answer. Why do you think I would tell you?"

So she cried for the rest of the seven-day feast. Cried the whole time and whined, until on the seventh day he finally broke down and told her the answer. Dried her tears right up. She sneaked off and told her people what she had found out and they came and found Samson and said, "We’ve got the answer. You asked the riddle:
